Wheeler Salver Final

Richard Southall from Saffron Walden GC won the Wheeler Salver, in what was his second county title of the year and 6th one in his golfing career.  At Gog Magog GC he faced an in form Kevin Diss from the home club in what proved to be an exciting match.

Southall went 1 up through the first hole with a 4. Holes were halved until the 5th when Southall went 2 up with a par 4. Both players shot birdies at the par 5 8th hole. On the short 9th Diss managed a par 3 to go back to 1 down at the turn.

Another par 4 at the 10th  by Diss brought the match back to all square. On the 11th Southall hit a pin seeking iron and holed the put for a birdie to go back to 1 up.

On the 14th both hit excellent birdies and Southall reached the 15th 1 up. An over hit putt on the 15th and missed return and the match was all square again. On the 16th a deft chip by Southall to a foot meant a par to a Diss bogey so Southall went back to 1up.

A slight blocked tee shot by Diss on the 17th and a par by Southall meant he won the match 2&1.
