U18’s qualify for England County Finals

Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union U18’s travelled to Overstone Park on the 29th of May to Compete in the MGU-England Golf Inter-County Qualifiers.

Although Cambridgeshire travelled with a very strong team consisting of; Sam Marshall (St Neots), Theo Morris (Links Newmarket), Joe Austin (Links Newmarket), Ellis Kerr (Gog Magog), Sam Hewson (Brampton Park), they remained underdogs as Cambridgeshire have never won an event of this stature.

The first round went well and the team returned a score of 371 (for 5 counting rounds). The highlight being a 4 under par 68 for Sam Marshall. This left the team in 2nd place, 4 shots behind Northamptonshire with a score of 367.

The second round didn’t get off to the hot start that was anticipated with Sam Marshall returning a 74, Ellis Kerr 85, and Sam Arthur 78. However, the rear of the field dug in and produced fantastic scores; Joe Austin 72, Sam Hewson 71 and Theo Morris 70 giving the team a second round score of 365. This took the total for 180 holes to 736 +16 to par, sealing the championship by 7 shots from Northamptonshire.

This is the first time that Cambridgeshire will represent the Midland Region at a national golf final at any level. The final will be played in Devon at Teignmouth Golf Club on the 26th – 29th of August, where Cambridgeshire will play three rounds of 36 holes against the champions of the other three regions.
