A glorious Indian summer day greeted the finalists of the Ron Freeman County Foursomes Knockout Championship at Links GC between Matt Pearce Ely City GC Paul Hodgkin Ramsey GC and Richard Southall both from Saffron Walden GC.
The opening four holes were halved. On the 5th hole Southall and Cambridge went 1up with a given birdie after their opponents lost a ball.
They went 2up with a four at the 7th hole. Holes were halved on the 8th, 9th and 10th. Pearce showed his A team pedigree with an iron shot under the trees to five foot to set up a birdie for Hodgkin to bring the score back to 1 up.
The 12th was halved after Southall hit a bunker shot to a foot. The deciding hole was the 14th when Cambridge nearly drove the green and Southall chipped to a couple of feet to make a birdie. They then won the 15th with a 5 to go 3 up going into the 16th hole.
Both pairings hit the green in regulation before Cambridge holed a long putt for a birdie to win the match for Southall and Cambridge 4&2.
This was Ian Cambridge’s first county title for the Saffron Walden greenkeeper. Thanks go to Links GC for hosting and to Andy Wylie, President of the Links Golf Club and a former County President for presenting the Trophy.
