Carrying on from their successful start against Essex & Suffolk last week, CAGU Seniors produced another fine effort to take back the Rhea Trophy from Bedfordshire at Newmarket Golf Club. After a couple of heavy defeats in the previous two years it was nice to come out and produce a really impressive performance.
However, as is still our way we again put ourselves in trouble in the morning going down 4-2. The morning round was closer than it looked with five of the six games going to the last, our two halves were gained by Captain Ken Parsons & David Haynes followed by Richard Beecroft & Steve Hedges backed up by a good victory for Paul Izzard and Gerald Collins.
With two points for a win in the afternoon fourballs we knew there was still everything to play for and the fightback began in earnest. Our 4-2 deficit was quickly wiped off the board with good victories for Ken Parsons & David Hayns and Kevin Hayes & Andrew Compton, it was then left to Terry Ryan and Neil Hughes together with Paul Izzard and Gerald Collins to deliver the hammer blows securing us an 8-4 victory in the afternoon and a 10-8 final score to take back the Trophy. A great effort by everyone that built on
the excellent results against Essex and Suffolk, hopefully we can use this as a spring board to the MSL and EASL league season which starts in about three weeks.
