Seniors make history and win Anglia league

The County Seniors set off to St Ives GC last Monday knowing that victory against Suffolk Seniors would mean they have an unassailable lead in the Anglia league.

In glorious weather, Cambridgeshire’s top foursomes pairing of Jeremy Baldwin and David Hayns set off against Taylor and Duffety. Playing good foursomes golf they won 1 up. Unfortunately, Bill Rusted and Keith Moore were hit by a number of birdies and were closed out by 4&2. Captain Goodman and John Yuill were then in a battle against Whymark and Crosby. The Suffolk pairing were 2 up with 3 holes to play and then the Cambridgeshire pairing summoned up all there experience to
win the next 3 holes and won 1 up. Goodman was on good putting form and Yuill was a deadly as ever with his driver to turn the match around.

Plumb and Heron lost 1 down to Brooks and Shillings. However, Cambridgeshire lead the morning foursomes after Ryan and Hughes won 1 up. They got down in 2 shots 6 times in 8 holes and Hughes slotted home a 30 foot birdie on the 8th to close the match out.

Goodman sent Plumb out first to use his highly competitive sporting experience to set Cambridgeshire off with momentum. Plumb with a single putt on the 5th took the lead. He birdied the par 5 8th and with a half on the 9th hole started the back 9 3up. Solid play and a super drive and 4 iron on the 14th closed the match out 5&4.

Baldwin followed Plumb with a win. He was 2 down after 8 holes and then some pin-seeking iron play wore his opponent down and he won 3&1. Hayns played the last 8 holes in 2 under par and got back from 4 down with 7 to play to halve his match.

Moore ‘s putter was hot. The match was all square after 10 holes. Moore then birdied the short par 3 12th to go 1 up. Moore then birdied the 15th to seal the game for CAGU. Rusted unfortunately ran into an inform Whymark and lost 5&4. Heron continued his county championship winning form and won 5&4. Yuill lost 2 down to Bearman.

Hughes, the icon of CAGU golf delivered again . His chipping was at its one handed best and won 4&3. This year Hughes has played 10 matches in Anglia league and Midland league and remains unbeaten with 8 wins and 2 halves.

With the match won Ryan closed out his opponent 2&1 and Goodman agreed to halve his match with the opposing captain on the 18th hole. Cambridgeshire won the singles 7-3 and won the match 10-5. This meant that the Seniors have an
unassailable lead in the Anglia league for the first time.

Graham Goodman captain said “Wow what a great effort by the boys all season. We have knitted together as a unit and delivered results especially away at Northamptonshire and fought hard for a draw in the wet at Swaffham. We now as a team move on to the Leicestershire game at Ely GC with a chance of winning the Midland east league.”
