Ron Freeman Final 2021

Four Gog Magog members fought their way through to the final of this foursomes knockout, all played at the Links, Newmarket Gog Club throughout the summer months. Four times winner Steve Jarvis teamed up with County Senior Kevin Diss who he last won this prestigious trophy with him in 2015.

The previous day Steve had equalled the course record on the Gog Magog Wandlebury course with a 65. They were up against five times winner Neil Hughes partnering Nick Smits who together, won the trophy in 2017. Nick, a former winner of the Nevada State Championship, also holds the course record at John O Gaunt with 63.

Jarvis and Diss stormed into a 3 hole lead after birdieing 3 of the first 4 holes which included a fantastic 3 at the 2nd hole which was playing long into a stiff wind. Hughes and his young partner Smits fought back admirably to pull it back to all square after 10 holes. Steve and Kevin turned up the heat again and won holes 11,12 & 13 to go 3 up once again.

After Neil and Nick won the 14th hole, Nick hit a tremendous drive down the 15th leaving the old boy just a flick to the pin and a 10 foot birdie putt was enough to reduce the deficit to just one hole. A stunning 2nd shot by Kevin to the 16th green and an 8 foot putt for birdie took it back to 2 holes and a good up and down at the par 3 seventeenth hole for a half was enough for victory by 2 & 1.

The match was refereed by Alan Todd, one of the new referees recruited by the County Golf Union.

Many thanks go to the Links, Newmarket Golf Club for hosting all the matches throughout the year.
