Midland Golf Union U14 team championship Longcliffe Golf Club

This is a 10-county induvial stroke play team event with 6 children per team, with the top 5 scores counting for each team.

The Midland Area Golf Union is made up of the following counties:

Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire & Herefordshire.

On a tough Longcliffe track with severe cambers on the fairways to add to the fun, our boys used the practice day well to figure out strategy for the competition.

The team set out from the first tee with Ellis at 10am with a tough par 3 uphill for starters and finishing with youngest member Aryan setting off at 12.50pm, the day was going to be a long one.

All the boys played their part and as the scores started coming in, we were in with a shout of retaining our crown as champions from last year, with a 76 from Ellis Kerr and 85 Harry Howell and a 79 from Lewis Karim we sat in the lead at halfway.

We continued to add very good scores with Harry Sherriff and Oscar Welch both adding a pair of 82’s, but it was becoming apparent that Shropshire & Herefordshire were not to be beaten with some particularly good scores and their final chap shooting a +1 73 gross.

All the boys once finished went out and ball spotted for other boys in the groups behind and giving moral support to their teammates, with all congregating on the 18th to watch young Aryan come in with an 85 also with the highlight of a birdie on the par 5 17th.

After the scores were totted up, we came in a fantastic 2nd position overall and a great team performance in defence of the champion’s crown.

Well done to the boys, they were a credit and pleasure to be with, and I am sure they all enjoyed the putting practice in the hotel hallway!!
