Goodman makes it three County titles for SWGC this year

After Ian Cambridge and Richard Southall won the Ron Freeman foursomes, Richard won the Wheeler salver it was up to Graham Goodman to win the CAGU Seniors Scratch Matchplay Championship at St Neots GC for a Walden treble.

The top eight players from the Seniors County Championship qualified for this. On the way to the final Graham beat defending champion Kevin Diss Gog Magog GC 2up and in the semi-final Neil Hughes Gog Magog GC on the 20 th hole. The final was between Graham and John Yuill from Links GC.

Graham won the opening hole with a par before Yuill reached the turn 1 up. Yuill then went 2 up through 12 holes. A 20ft par putt on the 13th by Graham prevented Yuill from going 3 up. Graham then played impressive golf and turned the match around with again a 20ft putt on the 15th to reduce the deficit to 1 down. On the 16 th Graham hit a tee shot to 10ft on the 16th and a par made the score all square.

On the 17th, Graham hit a wedge to 5ft and holed the putt for a birdie to go 1up with 1 hole to play. They both hit good drives down 18. Yuill hit his approach to 8ft. Graham, after taking his time hit a 6 iron to 3ft. Yuill missed his birdie and Graham slotted home with a three to win 2 up. A three, three and three finish made Graham CAGU Seniors Scratch Matchplay Champion 2024 and completed an amazing treble for Saffron Walden GC.
