Cambridgeshire teams finish before the beast arrives
The Cambridgeshire golf teams finished their match just before “The beast from the east” arrived last week. In the first friendly of the season, CAGU Seniors took on a CAGU team at Saffron Walden Golf Club and the CAGU team ran out winners 4.5 to 1.5.
Although the expected CAGU side won there were a number of positives for Graham Goodman’s men. In the top pairing Terry Ryan and Kevin Diss beat Callum Brookes and Owen Meeds 1up.The seniors were 2 down at one stage but pars on 15th ,16th ,17th and 18th secured victory. Brookes unfortunately 3 putted the last hole which let the senior pairing in. Steve Trench and new partner Keith Moore finished all square to Luke Ryan and Alfie Guy-Pinkney. The seniors were 5 down after 5 but fought back to halve the match. Birdies on 8 th 9 th and an eagle on 10 th put the seniors on their way. For the CAGU side there were emphatic victories for Toby Crisp and George Howard 5&4 - Paul Hodgkin and Craig Thorburn 6&5 - Jason Evans and Oliver Rust 7&6.
Graham Goodman seniors captain commented “ The match proved a good first outing for the County sides. For the seniors Kevin and Terry won a tight match with steady play throughout. Another positive was the pairing of Trench and Moore who fought back well.Also Bob Setchell and Bil Rusted only lost 2 down against a strong pairing. To be successful in our league matches the last few pairings have to deliver and we have the beginnings of that in a strong team”
