Bourn win Jock Stewart Trophy
Last Saturday saw the final of the popular Jock Stewart Memorial Trophy at the Newmarket Links Golf Club. The weather was kind with some sunshine and cloud but thankfully no rain.
Bourn, the current holders of the trophy, were up against St Neots, a repeat of the 2012 final where the latter came out on top. Both teams were very strong with Bourn winning all of their previous rounds by 3 – 0 and St Neots the same except for the semi-final, so it promised to be a hard fought final.
The final comprised of 3 matches of 36 holes foursomes with one match being played in each of the handicap ranges of 6 to 10, 11 to 14, and 15 to 20. All 3 matches are played off scratch with no shots being taken.
The defending champions only had two of last year’s winning team in their line up, namely Chris Jones and Matt Offer.
In the 1st match Bourn staged a spirited fight back after being 3 down at lunch to get it back to all square after 16 holes.
However, a monster putt on the 17th for a birdie two and another win on the final hole saw the experienced St Neots pairing of Barry Stearns and Paul Brister take the win by 2 holes.
In the 2nd match Bourn were 3 up at lunch. St Neots fought hard and pulled it back to 2 down after 15 holes before the Bourn pairing of Chris Offer and Peter Milton sealed victory on the 16th with a 3 & 2 victory.
With the match at 1 -1 it was all down to the 15 to 20 handicap group to settle the match one way or the other and it was a nail biting time for both non playing captains. In a very tight match, Bourn were 1 up at lunch.
St Neots continued to dig deep in the afternoon and it was tit for tat until Bourn took a 2 up lead and then held on until finally wrapping it up on the 16th by 3 & 2 when the St Neots pair went in the long grass and struggled to get the ball.
A comment from Colin Biggs the team captain was “A great day, nerve wracking for myself but we got there in the end
All of the matches were hard fought but played in a great spirit.
The Links course was in very good condition and Dennis Fawkes and his catering team provided both teams with excellent food. Dennis is retiring at the end of the year and will be greatly missed by CAGU as he has always provided top class food for the County events held at the Links GC over many years.
The draw for the 2017 Jock Stewart Trophy will take place in October this year.
