The County Seniors Championship took place on a sunny day on the Gog Magog Old Course last Monday.

There was a field of 51 competitors and the Championship commenced at 12 30pm from the first and tenth tees in perfect conditions for golf.

First in was John Yuill of the Links Golf club with a very creditable 72. John last won the seniors title in 2015 around this very course with a 75 and must have been fancying his chances of repeating this feat. Last year he lost in a play off to Kevin Diss of Gog Magog at the Bourn GC.

Out on the course with a chance of glory was past winner Neil Hughes of the home club who was out in 33 strokes. Sadly after missing a four foot putt to remain at level par after 15 holes he finished badly and recorded 74. Unfortunately old age took it’s toll!

Mich Heron, also of the home club had a relatively mixed bag going out. He was 1 under after 4 holes then triple bogeyed the short par 4 fifth hole, only to bounce back with an eagle 3 at the seventh hole. A terrific back nine of 34 strokes, consisting of all 4’s and 3’s, left him also on 72 and tying for the lead with John Yuill.

Rookie senior Graham Goodman of the Saffron Walden GC, eventually overcame his nerves from playing in his 1st Seniors Championship. After a horrendous 9 holes of 42, starting from the 10th tee, he came back in an excellent 32 for a 74 and a joint 4th place with Neil Hughes.

After current champion Kevin Diss could only manage a 75 it looked on for a sudden death play off between Yuill and Heron.

One player out late in the field who definitely had the credentials to do well in his first Seniors Championship, was Jeremy Baldwin of Nene Park Golf Club. A former Kent County Champion who played for the Cambridgeshire county team in the 1990’s after moving to this area with his job at Footjoy /Titleist in St Ives.

He started with an excellent birdie at the 1st hole where he hit a drive and 7 iron to 8 feet. Having given the shot back at the 2nd by three putting and losing another with a bogey at the 4th, he recovered well by birdieing 8 and 9 to be out in 34 strokes.

Another 3 putt at the 10th hole brought him back to level par and missing the green at the long par 4 twelve hole took him to one over.

After missing good birdie opportunities at 14, 15, and 16 caused by poor putting, he showed his class by hitting an eight iron to 12 feet on the downhill par 3 seventeenth hole and holing the putt to get back to level par.

A bogey at the last hole would still win him the title and that’s exactly what he did by knocking it on the green in 2 shots only to take 3 putts again to get down in 5 and a winning total of 71 gross.

The Gog Magog Golf club are to be congratulated for their superb hospitality on the day. It was pleasing to see that the Captain Bruce Mew played with the winner, as did Links Vice Captain Hamish Fleming who unfortunately had to retire after 14 holes with a bad ankle.

The course was set up brilliantly by the Course Manager Andrew Howarth with testing pin placings but nothing too difficult for the silver foxes!

The catering was excellent, as was the service, so many thanks go to bar manager John and catering manager Alan.

Jeremy now goes on to represent Cambridgeshire at the Seniors Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa in September so we all wish him well.

Next year’s Seniors Championship will be held at the St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club on Monday 2nd July.
