County Foursomes Championship 2021

The 24 pairs competing for the County Foursomes Championship arrived in blustery overcast conditions at the St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club yesterday.

Looking out from the the clubhouse lounge, the course looked to be in splendid condition and would prove to be a real test for most of CAGU’s best golfers.

1st round leaders were Andrew Grimwood and Adam Northfield of the St Neots Golf Club with a splendid one under par 71, which included birdies at 1, 4, 10 and 14. Andrew is having a tremendous season having already won the County Fourball with young Oliver Toyer, not to mention the January Cup won at the County Championship. He also recently led the England Golf Logan Trophy (over 35’s championship) after the 1st round.

His partner Adam is the current holder of the John Durman Handicap Trophy and both were members of the winning St Neots team in the last Goddard Cup.

Only 5 pairs managed to break 80 and in 2nd place were Jeremy Baldwin of Nene Park and Richard Temple of Gog Magog on 76, closely followed by James McLaughlin and Isaac Rowlands of Ely City on 77.  County Championship Ed Dimambro and his partner George Howard were also on 77. The only other pair to break 80 were Joe York and Jake Plumb also of Gog Magog.

The stiff breeze was also accompanied by the occasional heavy shower and this continued into the afternoon round. There was no real serious challenge to the leaders in the afternoon, although York and Plumb came in with a fine 73 to claim the runners up spot on 152. Grimwood and Northfield continued their good work posting a 76 for a winning score of 147. Taking 3rd place were Dimambro and Howard on 153.

Winners of the best net score were County stalwart Mbachi Knana of Elton Furze and his partner Allan Young of Nene Park with a net score of 152. Mbachi is great supporter of CAGU Golf and it was great to see him in the prizes again.

Many thanks to James Hart of St Ives and his team for supporting CAGU so well on the day with excellent food and refreshments and to the green staff for preparing a course in very good condition.

Next year’s Foursomes Championship will take place in its usual date in April on the Wandlebury Course at Gog Magog.
